CHICAGO PHILATELIC SOCIETY WILL HOLD HISTORIC 3000TH MEETING

Society Plans Commemorative Celebration at Chicagopex 2023

Chicago Philatelic Society will celebrate its 3000th meeting at its annual show, CHICAGOPEX 2023. Organized October 8, 1886, continuing the Chicago Stamp Collectors Union, which was organized December, 1884, the Chicago Philatelic Society is American Philatelic Society Chapter No.1, and one of the two organizations with the longest uninterrupted service to philately in the United States.

The 3000th meeting celebration will be held at CHICAGOPEX 2023 - November 17-19, 2023 at the Westin Chicago Northwest, located in Itasca, IL. The convening societies for the annual show include the American Association of Philatelic Exhibitors, American Revenue Association, the Collectors Club of New York, and the American First Day Cover Society.

In preparation for its 3000th meeting celebration, members of the stamp collecting club reflected on the group’s long history and activities. Currently the CPS meets once per month online. The format of the meetings holds society business discussion for the first 30 minutes. The business of the society is social and educational. The second hour is reserved for a visual and often scholarly presentation of stamp collecting interests of various members and guests. Those joining the meetings may see presentations as diverse as “The U.S. Revalued Postal Stationery of 1971,” “The Travelling Post Offices of Uruguay”, “Unofficial Registration of Mail in the United States 1845-1855”, “Postmarked in Ukraine: 1000 Years of Ukrainian History”, “The Jewel City - Postcards of the Panama Pacific International Exposition, San Francisco, 1915”, or “Allied Occupation of German East Africa, 1914-1920.”

The Chicago Philatelic Society membership’s strongest bonds include a common interest in stamp collecting, known as philately, and postal history, the examination and study of the mails, also known as cover collecting. Many members are advanced collectors and accomplished competitive exhibitors. Membership is open to all who are interested in meeting and learning from each other. The society sponsors an annual CHICAGOPEX postage stamp show which includes dealers, exhibits, a literature competition, educational seminars and meetings, and a youth area. The 3000th meeting celebration will be held at CHICAGOPEX 2023.

To mark this historical event souvenirs will be available for purchase at the show. The full show schedule and other details can be found at www.chicagopex.org, the Chicago Philatelic Society’s website.
